Beer Review: Raspberry Wheat by Whitstable Brewery

Beer Review: Raspberry Wheat by Whitstable Brewery

Follow @TheGuestAle Following my predilection for the Whitstable Brewery Oyster Stout I overcame my disdain for fruit in beer and opted to try its Raspberry Wheat beer. I find it a very acquired taste and the very thought of red fruits in beer serves up sickly-sweet thoughts of Früli. The Raspberry Wheat is certainly sweet, something you instantly suspect as you pour out the cloudy red fluid into the glass. It comes with a rustic yeasty nose and there is some light carbonation although the head dies quickly. Taste-wise it’s sharp. You can pick up the raspberry but there’s a medley of fruits that come to the fore. I picked up some gooseberry but otherwise I found this a...

Beer Review: White Lady by Cairngorm Brewery

Beer Review: White Lady by Cairngorm Brewery

Follow @TheGuestAle My odyssey through the Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt 2012 continues with the White Lady wheat beer from one of my favourite parts of the UK, Cairngorm. I’d very much like to know if Cairngorm Brewery’s White Lady is named after the famous chairlift, in which case that must be a world first. It’s a Bavarian style wheat beer presented in a rich, dark treacle colour thanks to the use of roast malts. There’s a zesty head with hints of raisin, coriander and toffee in the nose, and the beer is smooth but is surprisingly light bodied. Flavour-wise, the White Lady is tangy and sweet malts linger at the back of the throat. It’s got some character...

Beer Review: Wheat Beer by Wadworth Beer Kitchen

Beer Review: Wheat Beer by Wadworth Beer Kitchen

Follow @TheGuestAle Here is a little gem from The Beer Kitchen, which is a new “hand-crafted” range from Wadworth. I think it’s right on the money here as it aims for the discerning beer drinker, certainly a growing breed as the range to choose from continues to expand. The company was kind enough to send me some samples and, being summer, I kicked off with the Wheat Beer. It’s a classic “Belgian White” style. The brewer adds a beer yeast which it says presents a clove and coriander edge. Clove certainly is a feature in the taste along with the classic lemon meringue pie flavour and nose that tends to be a mark of these Belgian Whites. It’s zesty,...

US Beer Review: Samuel Adams’ Whitewater IPA

US Beer Review: Samuel Adams’ Whitewater IPA

Follow @TheGuestAle This is my last American craft ale review for a month as in a few days I’ll be swapping the US beer scene for a short hiatus to Cornwall and Kent for a brief return to the UK world of ale. No doubt I’ll also be swapping the heat of the Pennsylvanian summer for the milder Cornish climate, but it’s a chance to crack open some awesome English beer. Cornish beer video review to come next month! My last offering for a short while then is from a brewery for which I have reviewed before: the famous (Stateside at least) Samuel Adams Boston Beer Company. It’ll be July 4th soon, the US Independence Day celebration  where folks...

Beer Review: Blanche de Wissant

Beer Review: Blanche de Wissant

Follow @TheGuestAle If you’re planning a booze cruise to Northern France then it’s worth looking beyond the wine and casting your eye over the local beer. It was at Montrieul-Sur-Mer, an hour’s drive south west of Calais, that I came across the 2 Caps brewery’s products in a local Carrefour supermarket. The Blanche de Wissant is a white beer which conforms to the Northern European white beer tradition. It’s lighter than most though, weighing in at a moderate 4.5% ABV. Blanche de Wissant is brewed with soft winter wheat and malted barley and it’s a cloudy, egg yolk colour with lively gas and a very frothy head. There’s an aromatic citrus nose. On the face of it, the Blanche...

Sainbury’s Great British Beer Hunt – Part 2: Flying Dutchman by Caledonian

Sainbury’s Great British Beer Hunt – Part 2: Flying Dutchman by Caledonian

Follow @TheGuestAle In part two of four reviews of the 16 candidates in the Sainsbury’s Great British Beer Hunt, I’m looking at the Flying Dutchman by Caledonian of Edinburgh. I’m a big fan of Scottish brewers, from Black Isle, Brewdog and Innes & Gunn right through to Caledonian. The Flying Dutchman is a light-bodied spring ale, aided in its creation by Heineken’s Henk Oexman, hence its recipe as a ‘wit bier’ (white beer). It’s got that sweetness that Benelux beers bring without the sugariness, making it more of a very quaffable golden ale. Right from the packaging, a very attractive and striking label, sticking close to its Dutch origins with a subtle orange colour, the Flying Dutchman is a...

Beer Review: Blue Moon Belgian White Beer

Beer Review: Blue Moon Belgian White Beer

Follow @TheGuestAle When you read that a craft beer has won at the World Beer Championships three years in a row your expectations rise significantly. So it was with the Blue Moon Belgian White beer, available in Sainsbury and other outlets, about which I had heard great things by word of mouth. The Blue Moon Belgian White is made with oats, orange and coriander and comes as a cloudy orange mass, fizzing gently. Its nose is a complex citrus mix with a hint of orange blossom about it – a very jasmine-like fragrance. Taste-wise there’s a subtle citrus kick. The texture makes the Blue Moon extremely easy to drink, especially on a summer’s evening, with a late herby kick....
