Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is a funny place. Not only do you endure possibly the longest and most tedious runway taxi of your travelling life, but gentlemen can also enjoy the chance to aim their pee at one of Schiphol’s famous urinal flies. Oh, and you can buy craft beer in the supermarket, too. One of the brands on sale is Flying Dog from the US.
I bought the Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale, “the alpha of the pack”, according to the brewer. It’s not that bitter at 35 IBUs (International Bitterness Units) and uses Crystal malts coupled with Northern Brewer and Cascade hops.
I thought this was fairly decent, actually. Golden colour, zesty and very much an American pale ale (hence the name “Classic”), and reminds me a little of the Brooklyn Lager. Reasonably full-bodied, relatively hoppy, not too carbonated and reasonably balanced. Zesty burst but a little coppery in taste, which matches the colour.
The essentials:
ABV: 5.5%
Colour: Copper
Nose: Light citrus but not much to speak of
Taste: Malt and hop balance. A little coppery
Our verdict: OK. Very much in the American style and certainly sessionable.
