Beer Review: Kernel Brewery Black FASM Tate IPA

03/07/2011

I recently was sent a couple of samples by the Kernel Brewery of London Bridge (thanks, guys!), one firm which really likes to create strong, hoppy India Pale Ales (IPAs). Really strong, grassy IPAs are an acquired taste but fast growing in popularity.

I’ve reviewed a Simcoe-based IPA from Kernel previously, but this black IPA combines Apollo, Citra, Columbus and Summit hops, giving it sharp, zesty orange nose. It really is an overwhelmingly complex taste, so the drinker may denote all manner of different flavours. At times it’s yeasty, grassy and yet smooth, with a hint of coffee.

The Essentials:

ABV: 6%

Look: Black with bubbly head

Nose: Zesty orange

Taste: Complex and chameleonesque: Like burnt barleywine

Our verdict: If you’re into this hardcore IPAs then this craft beer is up your street, but I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a session ale.
